CHARM CITY (The Demon Whisperer #1) #amwriting

https://www.wattpad.com/story/56172477-charm-city-the-demon-whisperer-1

Over the past few weeks I've been uploading chapters of my WIP urban fantasy over at Wattpad.com. It's an experiment in more ways than one: I've never posted a full-length story on Wattpad before, let alone something that hasn't been scoured and shredded by my trusted beta readers. So why am I doing it?

I think it has to do with the impulsivity of it all. Over the years, I've gone from a seat-of-my-pants writer to someone who has learned (and will never know all of) the craft of writing and the business in general. Every book I published took me farther along the path. Since my first publication upon my return to serious writing (a poem back in 2009) I've learned so much... and I've developed a lot of good habits and methods.

However, a certain element of impulsivity was waning.

I often think back to the first novel I started, one I wrote in secret during stolen moments when the ideas felt like they'd blow out the side of my brain if I didn't write them down. Those passionate bursts of inspiration truly kindled my happy writing habits.

But with time and growth and knowledge and training came more planning, more foresight, more structure. Less seat-of-my-pants.

It's a mixed blessing.

So... I'm giving myself a dose of impulsivity. (And it's so refreshing. Exciting. A little nail-biting, even.)

Unfortunately, I can't turn off the part of my writer's brain that is addicted to craves feedback. If you'd care to offer a comment on any of the chapters I've posted, I would really love to hear it. Really.

And if you like what you read, I hope you share it along.

CHARM CITY (The Demon Whisperer #1)

The darkness is rising and one man stands against it: the exorcist mage Simon Alliant. But in Baltimore, he finally meets his match...a part-mortal divinity with the power to whisper away demons.

Simon Alliant is an exorcist who battles demons, whether he wants to or not. Sometimes it's not so bad...he gets to play with magic, after all. But for Simon, magic represents a demon of another kind. He's addicted to magic and it takes more than a handful of charms to keep that particular demon at bay.

Chiara is part Light, part Dark, and stubbornly mortal. The woman has a way with words: she literally talks demons into abandoning their human hosts. Simon thinks that's not the only trick she has up her sleeve-and that's pretty high praise coming from a mage like him.

As intriguing as that may be, Simon has too many reasons to distrust her...one of them being his more-or-less partner, an angelic Watcher. Amidst all the celestial warnings of the rising dark comes a new prophesy that makes him wonder: is Chiara a threat to him and all of mankind?

Or will she be his salvation?

CHARM CITY: A New Urban Fantasy Series to be Released on Wattpad

Thank goodness November is over. Technically, it was a #NaNoFail since I didn't hit my 50k words. Boo.

But I can't call it a complete failure. I did a ton of writing…so, in the end, I totally came out a winner.
Looking back, I think that, my NaNoWriMo handicap aside, I wasn't focused enough on one project. Over the past few weeks, I had two different WIPs competing for attention. Two totally different books. Two completely unrelated worlds. I started out with the first book in my newest urban fantasy series, CHARM CITY, as my November project but then switched gears completely and changed it to a paranormal mystery called GHOSTLIGHTS OF POTTER PARK.

I plotted that second book like I've never plotted before and started banging out that story. With a plot outline right next to me, I just had to follow the story along and connect all the points. Should have been a walk in the park, right?

Wrong. I got hung up on a small detail and the wheels stopped turning before I even hit 11K.

I tried researching my way around it but you know what Internet research is like. You do very well for about fifteen minutes until you realize you're approaching info overload and the next thing you know, you're reading Buzzfeed articles.

Writing came to a complete halt before Thanksgiving due to a sad family event and I didn't even open MS Word for a week. Yes, I felt guilty. No, there was no other alternative. My writing was 100% completely mental for nearly two weeks.

Bad timing, November. You should have been more willing to work with me.

When I was finally ready to get back to work, it wasn't GHOSTLIGHTS that I opened. It was CHARM CITY.

I'd missed that story. Exorcists battling addiction and half-breeds torn between the Light and the Dark? Can't resist it. (There may even be a hell gate or two.) The story takes place in Baltimore and in Boston, two places where I enjoyed spending a lot of time. Writing CHARM CITY is like going back for a visit. Except, there's demons.

Unlike GHOSTLIGHTS, I didn't get hung up on the actual setting for CHARM CITY. In fact, Charm City is a nickname for Baltimore (made for a very happy coincidence considering I left loose an unconventional magician in Baltimore.) That story just comes out every time I open the manuscript. I flip to a page, I watch it unfold in my mind, and I write it down.

I love stories that do that. 

And I think I'm going to start posting it on Wattpad. I've been feeling a little bad about hiding that story away so I'll be posting a chapter each week on Wattpad. Once I get the first chapter up, I'll made a better announcement with a cover and blurb and all that fun bookly goodness.

If you're on Wattpad, look for me at:

And be sure to follow me so that you know when each part of that story goes up. I'd love for you to read along and let me know what you think about each chapter as the story unfolds.

If you're not on Wattpad, go join. It's fun, it's free, and it will keep you up to your eyeballs in stuff to read. Who doesn't love that?

At any rate, by the time November and NaNoWriMo wrapped up, I didn't earn a winner's badge…but technically, I still won. GHOSTLIGHTS may have clocked in at mid-10K, but CHARM CITY was at 40k on November 30th. Two stories, fifty thousand words.

Sounds like a #NaNoWin, after all.

Wolf's Bane Wrap-Ups and Winners!

Has it already been a month?

The moon is slowly waning gibbous, like a pounding heartbeat slowing after a chase. We catch our breath, watch the sky, and count the days until we run again.

I spent the morning sending emails and packaging prizes... we had TWO gift pack winners, thanks to your devotion to all things Rafflecopter :) You can check the widgets here and in this post here to see if your name came up.

There is also a copy of WOLF'S BANE going out to a reader in Portugal, thanks to the Goodreads giveaway. (Amazingly, it was a Portuguese reader who won BLEEDING HEARTS at Goodreads... she was also an avid reviewer and YouTuber who became one of my long-time supporters. See Ner's website to check out her reviews of Bleeding Hearts, Blood Rush, and Wolf's Bane) Portugal is high up on my list of Places I Must Visit because it's full of people who are passionate about books!

As promised, another Demimonde Companion story is up on Wattpad.com...you can read The Horus Bird, which is a deleted scene from WOLF'S BANE (Demimonde #3). Spoiler alert if you haven't finished BLOOD RUSH yet...

If you are still in the mood for a giveaway, check out this post on the Beach Reads giveaway... you can still get really lucky!

Thanks for hanging out with me on the release tour for my latest book... bless you all and Happy Reading!

Final Days of the Wolf's Bane Tour...

The darkness remained at the edges, content to let the sun shine while it was the sun's proper time to do so. But night would fall. It always did. The sky turned, the wheel turned, and eventually, we turned with it. --Wolf's Bane (Demimonde #3)

We are in the last week of Wolf's Bane release tour... and the full moon is approaching once more.

I remember watching the moon as I wrote this final book in the trilogy. I'd found the coolest little app for my Windows phone and kept track of the moon's swell and wane throughout the months. Each night, I'd check the sky to see where in the Wheel we were and I'd contemplate my character, Sophie, doing the same thing... counting the days until the moon would shine full and reveal her fate. Each chapter reflects the wax and the wane of the moon as we count down the days with her.

The moon reaches full on Saturday, and in the days that follow it we'll be wrapping up the tour. There will be another Demimonde Companion story going up on Wattpad.com...this one a deleted chapter from Wolf's Bane.

We'll also be finding out the winners of the various giveaways. Haven't entered? Find the two Rafflecopters here and here, and the Goodreads giveaway here.

After that, you can read The Horus Bird, which is a deleted scene from WOLF'S BANE (Demimonde #3).

Watch Facebook and Twitter for announcements when the next stories go up.

In the meantime, help me countdown the final hours...the WOLF'S BANE blog tour starts tomorrow!
