Terri Rochenski Interview (Make Believe Blog Tour)

Today, I'd like to welcome author Terri Rochenski. She's excited to promote her story in the new MAKE BELIEVE anthology and she's here to share a little more about herself.

 Thanks for joining us, Terri!

Tell us about your story in the newly released Make Believe anthology.
I’m totally going to cheat here & give you the blurb. I worked too hard on it to try and reword!!
Sacrificial Oath
An impetuous act unwittingly makes Alesuela the fulfillment of the Sovereign’s Blood Oath to their Goddess. In five days, she’ll be forced to make the greatest choice of her life: become the virginal sacrifice already promised, or force the man she loves most to die in her place.

With an impossible choice in front of her, she searches for ways to undo the oath, and in her quest, finds not everything in her life is as she expects.
How did the opportunity to take part in this project come about?
Someone in my writer’s forum Scribophile made an announcement that J. Taylor Publishing released an anthology call based on a picture prompt. I got lucky and that photo became the beautiful cover.
You can tell a lot about a writer just by looking at her writing space. Describe yours.
Ha! First it’s my clipboard & pen, then I move to the kitchen table where my laptop gets shoved around amidst Play Doh, My Little Ponies, and crayons.
Tell us one strange (or fun) thing about your reading/writing habits that your fans may not know.
It used to be that I write by hand, but that strangeness has been uncovered.
I’m extremely organized. Every story has its own notebook. Every novel ends up with a 3-ring binder with all the research pages in page protectors.
What's the next project we can look forward to from you?
My fantasy novel is currently in beta readers’ hands. Hoping to get it submitted to my publisher before this post goes live! *fingers crossed*
A few years ago everything I believed in was swept from beneath my feet, leaving me questioning my faith. This story started as an outlet for my disappointment and anger. I’m hoping its underlying theme will resonate with readers or perhaps help them heal from their own hurt.
Here’s a thrown-together blurb:
As the only Native to escape imprisonment by the human High Priest, Hyla turns to her faith for help and answers, learning life is much more complicated than she'd ever dreamed.
Thanks for stopping by, Terri. I really resonate with the sound of that last blurb and I can't wait until you share it with us.Best wishes for your continued success!

Monday, December 10, 2012 Readers Choice Awards 2012

Today I read some news that will put a permanent spin on Monday mornings forever:

Bleeding Hearts: Book One of the Demimonde has earned two nominations in the annual Readers Choice Awards!

I can't express how thrilled I am. This year saw the debut of my first novel, an urban fantasy that has long been my magnum opus. It went from a secretive hobby to a craft-developing project to a published novel. Publishing with Pink Narcissus Press has been a dream come true because, not only did I get to see my work in print but I also gained a new family. My editors love that book as much as I do and the proof is the enthusiasm with which they've worked to get that book into print.

The readers' reactions on Goodreads have also been so exciting to read. Sometimes I sit back and scratch my head and think: Wow, is that my book they're talking about?

Voting will begin on December 21st and, if the world doesn't end, I'll post the link. :)

For now, take a look at these beautiful badges. I want to hug them.

I also want to hug DavinciKittie and Molly over at for their support of Bleeding Hearts (Demimonde #1). You gals have always made me feel like a champion. Hugs!
Please take time to vote when the poll goes live on December 21st. My deepest thanks go out to each of you. Cheers!

The End of the World BL0GH0P

    I get apocalypse anxiety.
When the whole Mayan calender threat first hit the news, I hyperventilated. OMG. We'reallgonnadie.
My husband just rolled his eyes. He's used to my vapors.
I'd long ago forbade him to watch any disaster shows or movies. Anything with killer tsunamis or nuclear fall out or apocolypto-anything. Off limits. We are a disaster-free zone in this house, dammit.
I did sit through that movie about the caldera below Yellowstone National Park. It's just a matter of time. I know it. So keep your tales of boiling geysers and killer bears to yourselves, because the true danger is that big-ass supervolcano getting ready to erupt. I bet those damn Mayans have it hard-wired to go off in two weeks.
    Deep breath...
Of course, I take comfort in the words of my guru, prophet of the stars Neil DeGrasse Tyson, who recently Tweeted:
    Neil deGrasse Tyson@neiltyson
Y'all should know by now that if the World were going to end for any cosmic reason, I'd tell you how and I'd tell you when.
I trust this guy. But still. Just in case the reason for our impending demise isn't a cosmic event, I've decided to go out, go with a bang...or at least a BLAST!

It's The End of the World Blog Hop

    Cover Reveal...Feel the BLOOD RUSH!

Add BLOOD RUSH to your Goodreads shelf!

Here is the face of my upcoming urban fantasy release BLOOD RUSH: BOOK TWO OF THE DEMIMONDE. Isn't it amazing?

Special thanks to artist Duncan Eagleson and my publisher Pink Narcissus Press for honoring me with this astounding cover. *lips-heart salute*

BLOOD RUSH will be released in May 2013.

Want a blurb? I can do that...

    Blood Rush (Demimonde #2)

Sophie doesn’t believe in happily ever after. These days, she’d settle for alive after sunrise.
Advice columnist and newly-appointed oracle to the demivampire, Sophie Galen has more issues than a Cosmo collection: a new mentor with a mean streak, a werewolf stalker she can’t shake, and a relationship with her ex’s family that redefines the term complicated. And then there’s her ex himself, who is more interested in playing leader of the vampire pack than in his own salvation.
Becoming a better oracle is tough enough, but when Sophie encounters a deadly enemy – one she never dreamed of facing – it will take everything she’s ever learned in order to survive.
And if you need a teaser...let's just say the girls on Team Rode are going to be very happy. ;)
Please visit the blogs that have graciously offered to host my cover reveal. If you leave a comment with the words I BELONG TO THE DEMIMONDE I'll send you a Blood Rush magnet--just leave your email in the comment and I'll contact you.

The Amulet of Ormisez by J. Keller Ford
There is only one way to save Elton Fletcher’s brother from an insanity-ridden death.
After years away from home, fighting for his people, Elton returns to discover his only sibling, Cayden, possessed by greed and malice, and responsible for malicious, unthinkable deeds. Cayden, though, isn’t the only one afflicted by the Amulet of Ormisez, and Elton finds himself in yet another battle, where the price of failure could be his own life.

    Birthright by Lynda R. Young
Christa can mask the pain and hide the scars, but running from a birthright is impossible.
She’s tried to escape her grief by fleeing to a small town in Florida. Much to her frustration, the locals think they recognize her even though she's never been there before. To make things worse, a man named Jack spouts outrageous theories about her.
Both spur Christa to bolt, to start fresh yet again, but there’s something about Jack that intrigues her enough to stay. The only problem? Someone else wants her to leave, and they won’t stop until she’s dead.

    Petrified by Kelly Said
A mysterious storm has replaced summer with winter, devastating crops and smothering Castle lands in snow. Prince Sterling August stands alone as a leader, lost in personal grief as well as a desire to help his people but with an inability to do either.

The answers he needs await him, but without Lochlyn, a woman who’s just as isolated as Sterling, he’ll never see what stands before him, cloaked in illusion.

Last Winter Red by Jennifer M. Eaton
Emily is a Red, a woman whose sole purpose in life is to produce offspring. When her husband dies and leaves her childless, she risks her life and forsakes the safety of Terra—a disease-free city born after the nuclear holocaust. Beyond its boundaries, she knows, survives a man with whom she can be properly paired.

The Outside, though, holds secrets the government struggles to keep, and what Emily discovers on her quest for a mate will change her life forever.

Escort to Insanity by J.A. Belfield
From a charity auction, to a stroll in the park, to the craziest night of her life. Nicole Harrington can’t help but wonder how a simple event went so drastically wrong.

Of course, the male escort she booked is wholly to blame. Not only charming but shrewdly intelligent, Benjamin Gold drags Nicole into a platoon of unimaginable problems—ones from which she’ll have to find the courage just to survive.

    Excerpt From Sacrificial Oath:

Alesuela’s knees ached, but she didn’t dare cease her prayers. Father had to return. He had to.
Blessed Goddess, bring him home safely. Please.
Continuing with her supplication, she lit another candle as she had vowed to do with each sunrise. Alesuela shifted on the woolen rug. A drip flowed down the taper’s side, pooling on top of three month’s worth of hardened wax.
Her beloved father, Amant, Sovereign of Vecina, sent weekly reports of the war’s progress—of small defeats and battles won. Although her intended, Lord Pedre Ashin, also rode at the army’s front, Alesuela’s thoughts rarely lingered on the younger man. No anticipation stirred in Alesuela’s breast over the postponed wedding, for Pedre never treated her with anything other than indifference.
Hands clasped, Alesuela lifted her gaze to the window above her chamber’s gilded shrine. The opening framed a picturesque view of the snowcapped Craesor Mountain where the Goddess dwelt. Looming in the east, the crater-topped peak blocked the summer’s rising sun. Scarlet smeared the sky, and the sweet scent of red poppies from her flower garden below drifted in on a dry breeze.
    Red poppies. Death.
    A shudder rippled through Alesuela.
He can’t be dead. Blessed Goddess, I am not yet ready to be Vecina’s Sovereign.
Dread wrapped Alesuela in its cold embrace.

    *shivers*  Love that!
Are you ready for more? Me too! That's why I'm including the Rafflecopter form for her giveaway. The contest begins December 3rd so if the form isn't live yet, just stop back the next day. It'll be waiting for you.

Cover Reveal: World of Shell and Bone by Adriana Ryan

The Demimonde Blog welcomes Adriana Ryan, author of World of Shell and Bone

    Coming December 7th, 2012

In a world ravaged by a nuclear holocaust, Vika Cannon knows there are no guarantees: no guarantees of safety, no guarantees that your neighbor is not actually a spy for the government, and no guarantees you’ll be allowed to emigrate to a new life in Asia.

New Amana is dying. Food and water are scarce, and people suffering from radiation-caused mutations—the Nukeheads—are the new class of homeless.

Vika has just one purpose: to produce healthy progeny using a Husband assigned by the Match Clinic. Unhealthy children are carted away to Asylums to be experimented on, just as Vika’s little sister Ceres was, eight years ago. Parents incapable of producing healthy progeny are put to death in gas chambers.
When she’s assigned a Husband shortly after her twentieth birthday, Vika expects him to be complacent and obedient. But Shale Underwood has a secret. He is a member of the Radicals, the terrorist group intent on overthrowing the government. And Shale has information about Ceres.

As she learns more about the Rads’s plan, Vika finds herself drawn to Shale in ways she’d never imagined. When freedom calls in the way of a healthy pregnancy, will she betray her government and risk death for Shale and Ceres?

    The Next Big Thing

My friend, author Rosemary DiBattista, got this crazy idea in her head that I might be the next big thing. She mentioned me in her latest post, which was so much fun to read that I had to play along.

Let's just pretend I am the next big thing....and I'm being interviewed by Rosemary, who truly is the next big thing. This is how it would go. :)

What is your working title of your book?

Blood Rush: Book Two of the Demimonde

Where did the idea come from for the book?

This is the second book in the Demimonde series. Book one, BLEEDING HEARTS, began when I had a dream about the hero and I woke up with the tagline in my head: Saving the world, one DAMNED person at a time.

That story developed in steps and snapshots of inspiration. The second book was started more or less simultaneously, and built on the main theme of redemption.  I write about vampires--more specifically, demivampires.

Traditionally, vampires feed on blood. What if sometimes it's more drug than food? I'm a pharmacist when my readers aren't looking, so I'm having a lot of fun exploring that idea. (Also having a lot of fun writing Rode's scenes. I love shocking my editor.)

What genre does your book fall under?

Urban fantasy. It's paranormal with romantic elements.

Which actors would you choose to play your characters in a movie rendition?

Zooey Deschanel would be a perfect Sophie.

The late Peter Steele could have given Marek a run for his (blood)money.

As for Rodrian, I just saw the perfect guy in a Perry Ellis ad, although he'd need hazel eyes instead of blue (and a sly grin). The wet dark curls tumbling down his forehead make him a dead ringer for my demivamp.

What is the one-sentence synopsis of your book?

The Books of the Demimonde: Sophie returns in Blood Rush where, these days, she's not interested in "happily ever after"--she'd settled for "alive until sunrise".

Will your book be self-published or represented by an agency?

Neither. J I work independently with the editors of a small but mighty publisher, Pink Narcissus Press.

How long did it take you to write the first draft of your manuscript?

Started it in, oh, 2006, I think. First draft was penned in between writing/marketing the first book. The final submission was completed this past June when my editor cracked the whip and commanded me to present her with another book.

What other books would you compare this story to within your genre?

Tough call--most books would focus on the romance of the story line and EVERYONE KNOWS the difference between urban fantasy and paranormal romance--right? I'd be drawn and quartered by romance readers everywhere if I dared promise something my book doesn't necessarily have: a happy-ever-after ending.

In my defense, however, I will steal (and perhaps maim) a line from  The Best Exotic Marigold Hotel: Everything will be all right in the end... if it's not all right then it's not yet the end.

Who or what inspired you to write this book?

The characters of the first book inspired me and demanded I further adore them with stories of their trials and triumphs. Music keeps me inspired--Lacuna Coil and their emotional melodies, especially.

What else about your book might pique the reader’s interest?

I created the mythological origins of my demivampires and werewolves by incorporating element from ancient Egypt. The rich treasure trove of legend and lore provide countless what if moments where I write in my demivampiric origins.

Include the link of who tagged you and this explanation for the people you have tagged.

My dear friend Rosemary DiBattista tagged me. She is a writer of cozy mysteries and romance, whose post you can find here.
My cracklin' Rose. :) I'm sure I'll pay dearly for calling her that.

Several other friends are most worthy of mentioning because I think each of them are definitely The Next Big Thing.

Tricia Schneider is a paranormal romance author whose books are available through The Wild Rose Press. We once shared a mall…now we share a publisher. J She dwells in the Shadows of Romance and occasionally visits me at the mall, which still holds me prisoner.

Danyelle Leafty writes fantasy for MG and YA audiences. I loved reading her book The Fairy Godmother Dilemma#1: Catspell and keep it on my desk where I can admire its splendor. She's one of my Query Tracker blog buddies.

Julie Jansen is a science fiction and horror writer. We fool around a lot with our fellow Coffin Hoppers and share a publisher in Pink Narcissus Press. She recently mailed me a set of bloody handprint window clings. They are so cute!

Jane Lebak also writes for the Query Tracker blog and every single one of her posts make me sit back and think--WHY AREN'T I WRITING LIKE THAT? She is a novelist, an essayist, a work shop presenter, a blogger, and a mom to a huge family. If you need to feel like you aren't working hard enough to get everything done, here is your motivation. Her publications list will make you feel completely inadequate but her sharp and occasionally inappropriate sense of humor makes it all better.

And Red Tash. Now, she was tagged by our friend Kim Koning earlier but she is too good to miss. Red writes dark fantasy and doesn't hold back--not even in her YouTube videos. LURVE that girl. Here is a link to her own NTB post.

    New Review November!

    Boy. It's quiet around here.

I just came off a triple-threat giveaway week when I participated in three different Halloween blog hops. This morning, I Rafflecoptered the winners and started sending out prizes. In the wake of so much activity, this morning the crickets are barely chirping on my Blogger page.

There is only one cure for the End Of Giveaway Blues...a bit of good ole hair of the dog.

I've decided that this is New Review November. Hence, the New Review November Giveaway.

Book Two of the Demimonde: BLOOD RUSH will be coming out early 2013 and the excitement is starting to build. Edits are steadily underway. The cover has been finalized and I'll be doing a cover reveal in December--just around the corner!

So, to support the new book's upcoming release, I'm opening the doors of my Demimonde to invite you all in.

Publishing is a noisy, crowded world, full of authors and publishers hollering READ THIS BOOK! I'm proud to be published by a small press but admit that getting my book seen in today's marketplace isn't an easy task.

Above all things, I want my book to fall into the hands and hearts of readers who will truly love the story...which is why I dearly appreciate my reviewers.

An enthusiastic review is the best gift a reader could ever give me--that kind of enthusiasm spreads like wildfire, like electricity over wires. Word-of-mouth is the most powerful marketing tool any author could wield.

I am gracious for every review I receive because they are like love letters to my book...and, to say THANK YOU to my reviewers, I am organizing a little giveaway...just for them.

Anyone who posts their review of BLEEDING HEARTS between today and November 15, 2012 is eligible to win one of two 25$ Amazon giftcards. The raffle form will remain open until midnight on November 18, 2012 in order to accomodate last minute entries. (Review must have been posted by midnight on November 15 to qualify.)

Additional entires may be earned by following BLEEDING HEARTS around the 'net. Just follow the steps on the Rafflecopter form to enter.

Thank you, each and every reviewer, for your tremendous support of my books. My heart is within each of you.

    Cheers, Ash
