New Release by Christine Karper-Smith: UNCHARTED COURSE #rockstar #romance

I'm so glad to be able to share this next book with you...I first "met" author Christine Karper-Smith over at QueryTracker.net, where we were both deep in the trenches for years. It's a special thing to celebrate a new book release, especially when you've been a part of that book's path to publication. Each of my QT buddies' book releases is a shared celebration for me!

And, hello? Rock star romance? You KNOW I was born to love this story :) Hope you will, too. Enjoy!

Josh Evans: How I Met My Hero
by Chris Karper-Smith

Readers and new writers believe that an author creates their characters out of thin air, somewhere in the right side of their brain. However, they actually meet them as they stroll through the newly written chapters. My characters slowly introduce their selves as I wrote Uncharted Course.

I first met Josh Evans, my male lead character in mid-2010. He was a one-dimensional rock star, who was a flirt, but respected women. He introduced himself to me by way of a memory of when I met a television star while working in radio. The star asked me to lunch, but I had to say no because I had another two hours to my shift.  Following the old rule of write what you know, I got to meet a new literary friend.

The first thing I did to bring him to life was to find out what he looked like. He had to be someone Corrie could love.  He started out as a six-foot, brown haired Brit with green eyes.  However, after a couple of revisions, his eye color changed to blue.  That lasted one edit.  His true eye color came through in the final revision – blue-grey.

He and I agreed that he would have the typical missing h when he spoke. But since he lived in the US, it was a trait that waivered depending on how long it had been since he visited England.

To the new writer, these things sound absurd and remain steadfast that they are the creator of the world in which their characters live, along with those who live there. But it’s when the writer listens to their character, they become someone people want to read about. Listen to how character A speaks to character B. Watch how character B reacts to character A. If the reaction or response isn’t natural or true, then the writer must listen harder to see who needs to change.

If the relationship between the character and writer continues after the final draft, the writer has listened to their them. For example, Josh and my relationship continues. I know what happens after the final sentence. I’ve envisioned it and considering adding it. But part of the art of writing is also knowing when to stop listening to the characters in one book and start paying attention to the characters in the new book.

Josh and Corrie’s story is told by her, as she reminisces about their relationship, in order to write a speech for his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Induction. She discovers nothing she writes can compare to the love songs he wrote for her over their years together. Each attempt fails, so she looks for inspiration outside of his office. Instead of writing, her thoughts take her back through their life together.

British rock legend, Josh Evans, and his group, Evantually, enter her life when they arrive at the radio station where she works as a producer. The hour she spends with them isn’t enough for her after looking into his eyes. She doesn’t hesitate to say yes when he asks her to go out with him that night.
Their relationship endures long-distance, groupies and months apart while his band is on tour, along with the peaks and valleys all couples face. But can these memories lead to a speech worthy of Josh?

Uncharted Course is now available on Amazon

The August day was like any other day Corrie had been called in to work an extra shift at the radio station until British rock legend Josh Evans and his band came in to be interviewed. Her life changes when they go on a date that night, but she doesn't foresee what is ahead of her - exes, groupies, tours, and marriage - all the things she remembers, as she attempts to write a speech for his Rock and Roll Hall of Fame induction...

CHARM CITY: Get hooked on a new #urbanfantasy series!

There are demons all around us, legions of the dark that break loose from Hell's restraints to prowl the mortal plane. Most people can't see them and will never suffer their torments. They are the lucky ones.

Guess that makes Simon Alliant the unluckiest man alive.

He's learned that the only luck a man has is the luck he makes for himself. Call him exorcist. Call him master of the dark arts. Call him dime-store magician. Most names don't matter, not when Hell knows yours.

Armed with his spells and his amulets and his desperate drive toward redemption, he fights the rising darkness and sends those demons screaming back into Hell, one minion at a time.

But not all demons can be exorcised. Some dwell too deep inside a man's bones to be so easily banished. Simon is smart--or, at least, cynical--enough to know which battles are worth fighting.

It takes more than a fistful of charms to stay alive in his line of work. And staying alive is the only way to avoid giving the Devil his due...

Welcome to the world of The Demon Whisperer.
It kicks off today with the Kindle release of
the first book in the series: CHARM CITY.

https://www.amazon.com/Charm-City-Demon-Whisperer-Book-ebook/dp/B01J42MO7Q/

The darkness is rising and one man stands against it: the exorcist mage Simon Alliant. But in Baltimore, he finally meets his match...a part-mortal divinity with the power to whisper away demons.

Simon Alliant is an exorcist who battles demons, whether he wants to or not. Sometimes it's not so bad...he gets to play with magic, after all. But for Simon, magic represents a demon of another kind. He's addicted to magic and it takes more than a handful of charms to keep that particular demon at bay.

Chiara is part Light, part Dark, and stubbornly mortal. The woman has a way with words: she literally talks demons into abandoning their human hosts. Simon thinks that's not the only trick she has up her sleeve-and that's pretty high praise coming from a mage like him.

As intriguing as that may be, Simon has too many reasons to distrust her...one of them being his more-or-less partner, an angelic Watcher. Amidst all the celestial warnings of the rising dark comes a new prophesy that makes him wonder: is Chiara a threat to him and all of mankind?

Or will she be his salvation?

Join the legions and pick your side: Light or Dark. Just know this...decisions like this are never easy, because there's no black and white when it comes to good and evil.

Grab your lucky charm. You might need it.

Happy Release Day, Katie French! #infiniteinkauthors #TheBreeders

Congratulations to Katie French on her newest release! At long last, we have it: the fifth book in The Breeders series…THE BARRIERS!

Book Five in the best-selling young adult dystopian series, The Breeders
THE BARRIERS

Riley hasn't seen her boyfriend Clay or her nine-year-old brother Ethan for two months. Between violent road gangs and ongoing clashes between the Breeders and the Free Colonies, are they even still alive? But Riley will never stop looking. Her search takes her to Kirtland Air Force Base, where she finds the remains of a battle and one glimmer of hope: rumors of the boys heading toward the Free Colonies and a man who can help her get there. The only catch? He nearly murders Riley the first time they meet.

Meanwhile, Clay, Ethan, and Betsy struggle to steer clear of bandits, thieves, and slavers. Their water is gone, along with Clay’s memory and Ethan's patience for Betsy, who only makes things worse by trying to convince Clay they're in love. With Clay's mind muddy, it’s up to Ethan to keep them alive long enough for Riley to find them.

The route back together is paved with trials—and how many more have to pay for their freedom with their lives?

THE BARRIER joins a wildly popular YA Dystopian series that, to date, has sold over 50,000 copies and has received more than 400 four and five star reviews! It’s also a firm placement in the Top Ten in Free Kindle Teen & Young Adult Science Fiction Dystopian Romance.

Need more convincing? Here’s a taste of the opening pages…

THE BARRIERS: The Breeders #5 by Katie French

Beetle drove up the cracked road as fast as the depleted solar car would go. Subject Seven was gaining on him.

He’d seen flashes of Seven in the rearview, racing along the roadside behind him, ducking in and out of debris, cactus, and brush. He’d stunned it, that much he knew for sure. Zapped it good from six feet away with his Taser, a killer shot by anyone’s standards, but it had recovered so quickly. It was then Beetle realized he never should have come alone, or this late in the day. Now, with no sun to charge the solar car and no juice in the batteries, he was a few minutes away from having to run.

And that would be a problem.

He’d tracked the damn thing all afternoon. The crumbled city was a veritable labyrinth of places for it to hide. Every collapsed building hid dark basements and closets. Each alleyway had piles of bricks and trash, perfect hiding spots for a being as disgusting and ruthless as the one he was tracking. Then he’d found the lair. Both terrified and excited, Beetle had waded through nests of shredded fabrics, dirty sweaters, blue jeans, and kids’ blankets, all culled from the abandoned storefronts and dragged into the basement of one of the collapsed buildings on Main Street. But Subject Seven wasn’t in the nest. Satellite technology wasn’t what it used to be. That could explain the error in Dr. Washington’s calculations, but as he climbed through chunks of the abandoned town the thing called home, he had a feeling Seven was setting him up.

The damn thing knew he was coming and had laid a false trail. One he followed until it nearly took his head off.

It was smarter than they thought. And more brutal.

They’d jumped him in an alley, Subjects Seven and Eight working in tandem. He hadn’t even considered Eight could be a threat. He’d nearly had his head separated from his body before he was able to get the Taser in his hands and zap them both. Once they were on their backs, he’d given Seven a swift kick, not that he would tell anyone. Then he’d grabbed Eight and ran.

Now he glanced in the backseat at the mound beneath the blanket. Eight—unconscious and safe. If he brought Subject Eight back, he’d receive a hero’s welcome. Dr. Washington could continue her experiments and “set the world straight again.” And if he failed? He didn’t know who he was more afraid of—the other doctors or Subject Seven.

His foot pressed the acceleration pedal to the floor, but the car continued to creep along, lurching like a drunk toward home. Only minutes left until the juice ran out. Until he was stranded.

“Come on, you bastard,” he said through gritted teeth. He pressed his foot down until it hurt, but the car continued to slow.

“Oh God,” he breathed, his fingers trembling as he glanced into the rearview. Where was Seven?

The solar car meant safety, a solid steel-alloy frame with giant all-terrain tires. What would he do when it finally died? How in the hell did he think he’d get away on foot carrying the nearly seventy-pound cargo? He couldn’t leave Eight behind. Dr. Washington would banish him to the desert.

The Taser should’ve laid Subject Seven out longer. Beetle thought a zap that powerful might’ve killed the thing. That one error might mean the end of his life.

The car slammed to a stop. Beetle’s chest rammed into the steering wheel, shooting pain up his sternum. Eight rolled off the seat and banged into him from behind. He hoped it was okay. He pressed the accelerator once more, but nothing happened. His wheels were stuck, and the car’s battery was almost dead.

“Sonofabitch!” he screamed, pounding the steering wheel until it hurt. Why wasn’t he paying attention to the road? Goddamn it, he was not going to die. He was not!

Glancing out the windows and seeing nothing but buttes and scraggly cactus, Beetle swung open the door and stepped out. The concrete in front of him had fallen away, tumbling into a broken pile on the bottom of a three-foot crevice that cut jaggedly across the road. It had probably been created by those earthquakes they’d felt a few months ago. His front wheel had gotten lodged in the crack. If he had seen it, he probably could’ve dodged it, but he was preoccupied with looking in the rearview. He leaned down and considered his predicament. The tire dangled into the open space, and the car was resting on its frame. If the batteries weren’t on their last legs, he could gun it in reverse and probably get free, but the car had given up the ghost.

“Shit! Shit, shit, shit!” he yelled, and then regretted it, swinging around to look for Seven. So far, nothing. Dear Christman Jesus, he had to hurry.

God, how far was he from the base? In the distance, he could see the dip in the road that led home. Why had Dr. Washington sent him alone? Why wasn’t the team watching on the satellite and sending help? Maybe they were watching and didn’t care. This could all be part of Washington’s plan. To see what Subject Seven would do when provoked. As sweat poured down Beetle’s face, he decided to hell with Subject Eight. To hell with Dr. Washington. He didn’t want to be torn to pieces and left on the pavement for birds to pick at his guts.

He heard heavy breathing behind him. The hairs stood up on the back of his neck.

From his periphery, he saw the huge shape just before it clobbered him.

He fell hard. His head jarred against the pavement with a smack that radiated through his body.

Blackness.

When he came to, everything was blurry, fuzzy shapes in brown, yellow, and green. He couldn’t remember… Subject Seven. When he turned, pain shot up into his head sharp enough for his consciousness to fade. He blinked his eyes into focus.

Subject Seven was tearing the solar car apart in a frenzy. Beetle heard the creak of complaining metal as the door was bent back.

“Ssstop,” Beetle slurred. Where was the Taser? His trembling hands crept down his sides, searching for pockets that seemed miles away. The pulsing pain at the back of his skull threatened to end him, but he couldn’t take his eyes off Dr. Washington’s greatest achievement. And her worst.

“Don’t take it,” he managed.

Subject Seven turned and pounced.

Beetle’s breath chuffed away as Seven slammed both hands into his chest. He gulped for oxygen, but there was none to be found. His eyes opened to see Seven’s face above his, evaluating, calculating.

There was no mercy in that gaze.

The last thing he felt was the blow to his skull.

October Frights Blog Hop (III): Dark Poetry

Today's Spotlight is on...

poetry, fantasy, red fist fiction, speculative, dark

"My crow leaps in a sudden sweep of wing and sails past, the scent of his feathers a balm to a soon-broken soul."

This volume opens with a piece that leaves the reader wondering: Is the speaker victim or victor? Shadows can obscure the details that would cement our perceptions of individuals or events.

Sometimes, shadows tell us more than we want to know.

Shadows prevail in each of the poems in The Scent of his Feathers, but Krafton is not afraid of the dark. In this poetry collection, she explores the darkness that surrounds us, dimming the edges of our well-lit worlds. Themes of death, devotion, despair, and desperation are expressed in subtle shades, allowing the reader to determine their own definitions.

How a person interprets these pieces--a collection of tiny everyday deaths--will depend on the reader and the flavor of the shadows within that person’s heart. Join Krafton as she explores the inherent beauty of twilight. Sympathize with the shadows of a soul. Understand what drives a spirit to desperation. And remember: without darkness, there can be no light.

We live our lives surrounded by poetry...even when we can't see the words. Even those who can't quite say they read poetry are still affected the poetry that permeates our world. Song lyrics...memorable movie lines...that's all poetry. Really.

And we absorb it without even realizing.

When I was a kid, I memorized a lot of poetry. It wasn't the cool thing to do; in fact, I'm fairly certain my friends would have thought it was the least cool thing on the planet. (And we're talking back in the 80s. We put a LOT of emphasis on cool.)

Even uncooler was the fact that I was drawn to the shadowy side of poetry. In the 80s everything was neon and geometric and WHAM! and totally tubular...and there was me. Smuggling Stephen King into Girl Scout camp and carrying Poe around in my heart everywhere I went.

I loved poems such as "Sonnet: To Science", in which Poe villainizes science for preying upon the poet's heart and pretty much slaughtering fairy tales and daydreams forever. (And yet, I became a science major in college. Hmm.)

Even more haunting are these lines from Thebaid, written by the Roman poet Statius in the first century CE:

"Pleasant lives droop and fall, [Death] with his sword cuts through the [Fates'] threads, and hurries the stricken city to the shades."

Or this, from his Silvae:

"Lay aside thy fears [for the beloved dead], and be no more in dread of threatening [Death]."

As far as poetry goes, that's epic.

Maybe poetry was my way of paying heed to my heart, even if my brain made me choose a more practical path. That's the coolest thing about poetry--it's duality. You can be a poet without ever writing a word, if only you scratch the words upon your heart.

Enter in the October Frights Blog Hop giveaway by commenting on today's post...

...and here's what I'd love for you to share: a poem or song verse or a few poetic lines, something that is dear to you, words that are forever in your heart. Whether the words are your own or lovingly lent to you by another, share your favorite poetry with us!

September already?! Good news & a great sale

I can't believe it's September already.

I look around my yard and think about all those ambitious plans I made...for June. lol Let's just call it #yardfail and move on.
viewBook.at/thief

One thing that did get done, however, was the launch of my latest novel, THE HEARTBEAT THIEF. It released on Kindle in June and zoomed to bestseller status (something that blow my mind.)  And the good stuff just seems to keep happening...

The Heartbeat Thief audiobook (2016)
First off, the paperback version will be available on September 18. If you like to hug books in between reading them, then you'll get your chance for some physical book love in only 10 days or so. There will be a week-long book tour the following week so watch out for guest posts, interviews, and giveaways (as well as pictures from my upcoming trip to Boston to see all the Edgar Allan Poe attractions. Calloo callay!)

Secondly, I can finally announce that the audiobook version of The Heartbeat Thief will be coming in 2016! It will be produced by Hannah Platts. If you check out her voice reels on her website, you will get an idea of what Senza Fyne is going to sound like.

on sale for 99cents on September 6 & 7...

Because I want to celebrate all the wonderful things that are happening this month. If you haven't yet read The Heartbeat Thief but love print and audio books, you can pick up the ebook for less than a dollar before making the commitment to a pricier format.

Hope you'll stop by the upcoming blog tour hosted by Xpresso Book Tours. They did such an amazing job hosting the Kindle release and I knew I had to get their help for the paperback release. Details coming soon!

Until then, grab a 99cent novel and dream about hugging print books and listening to Senza's tale and all sorts of Poe in Boston goodness :) I know that's exactly what I'll be doing...

F*R*E*E #Kindle DELIVERANCE (fantasy) Oct 1-5th

DELIVERANCE by Ash Krafton
Jor Thallon returns home a weary, grizzled veteran to find his people, the ones he spent his life protecting, have destroyed the one thing he held on to all those years: his faith.

Once a people devoted to the All-Father, the citizens of Granite Clearing have divided their God into dozens of separate aspects. His religion splintered almost beyond recognition, Thallon sets out on a pilgrimage to seek divine assistance. How can one old man change an entire religion torn asunder?

SPECIAL JAMISON EDITION: All proceeds will be donated to the Jamison Benefit Fund, established to help reduce medical costs for a young person with Crohn Syndrome.

How can your download of a free ebook help support the Jamison Benefit Fund?
Easy--if you read the book, you can review it! You don't need to write a review worthy of the NYT, either. Just a few words and your handful of stars will allow the book to rank up and become visible to the wide audience of Kindle readers.

There are billions of books out there, and it's harder than ever to get noticed. Each time you leave  simple review on Amazon, you put a spotlight on that book that never goes away. Get enough spotlights and the book may even become a recommended read--and that will help sales.

Every penny earned goes to the Jamison Benefit Fund. It's a cause that is really important to me and I thought that this book would be a good way to help another person out. My blessings can be his blessings. <3 p="">
Thank you for all your support. I hope you'll spread the word!

Thanks for your support!

Keep on the lookout for the next issue in my short story series...RESET BUTTON. Starting over has never felt so final.

Right now I'm scouting the perfect location for RESET BUTTON's cover shot. Like DOORWAYS and BLIND ALLEYS, I want to feature a local image (the two previous books show images from my corner of Schuylkill County, Pennsylvania). The area is full of mining towns that popped up 150 to 175 years ago, and is still chock full of remnants from that by-gone era.

The stories are ready to go...I'm just waiting until I see the shot that really pushes my button. Then, I'll finally be ready to push yours. :)

Until then, enjoy BLIND ALLEYS and have a read on me.

Cheers!

F*R*E*E on Amazon May 14-18: Strangers at the Hell Gate

Jagger Sintallon, a half-demon warrior, has dedicated his existence to fighting demons who enter the world through Hell gates. A loner of conflicting ideals, he offers shelter to a troubled woman but knows he is too rough, too dangerous, and too cocky for her delicate nature.

Dedicated to Divine Will, Sonya Camael, a Seraph, is determined to discover why she is drawn to Jagger's doorstep and the reason behind her mission. She needs the demon's help but fears he may get himself killed before she can figure it out and the world slips into Hell's dominion.

Sonya faces grave danger with evil stalking her every move, and Jagger shouldn't care but realizes he cares more than he'd likely admit. Sonya knows Jagger cannot win this war alone, but will her divine intervention mean his imminent end? Or will just the right combination of Heaven and Hell set the world right once again?

My first book with the renowned romance publisher The Wild Rose Press is the Black Rose release Strangers at the Hell Gate.

She's a determined angel on a mysterious mission. He's a demon hunter, who is half demon himself. When she knocks on his door, heaven meets hell...and opposites do more than attract....they ignite.
